The Transpacific Yacht Race ‘09 marks the 45th running of the world’s most enduring and greatest ocean race from California’s coast to Honolulu, Hawaii, a distance of around 2,225 nautical miles. Started in 1906, it is one of yachting's premier offshore races and attracts entrants from all over the world. The race is done every other year and organized by the Transpacific Yacht Club.

The "HULA" Results

We placed 3rd of the Santa Cruz 52s on both corrected and elapsed time to Hawaii.  We missed out on first SC52 to Hawaii on corrected time by less than an hour on corrected time.   That'd be considered a photofinish in a 13 day race.  If you add in all the Santa Cruz 50s, we beat all but one of them too.  So then we were 4th of 9 of the SC50s and 52s.  If the class breaks were the same as the last Transpac where there was a SC 50-52 class, we would have had a very nice showing.

More impressive is that we beat all but 2 boats in the other two divisions that left the same day as us.  This means, for instance, that we beat Cipango on corrected time which is pretty good given they were first in class, second overall in the last Transpac and had a full on race program.   If we were in the either of the two other divisions that left the same day, we'd have gotten a second in class.   Essentially, we were in the most competitive class on the day we left.  And with the Sunday start, which left 3 days after us, being by far the best with better wind, it had the effect of pushing us down the overall standings board due to a reason beyond our control.   So if you took away the Sunday start, then we were actually 8th of the 30 boats that started the same day as us or the prior start.

Finally, when analyzing our class times, 4 places (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th) were separated by less than an hour on corrected time.  This means we were less than hour off the podium in our very, very competitive class. We lost to the boat in front of us by only 17 minutes on corrected time after 13 days of racing.  The faster SC52 Relentless finished only 50 minutes ahead of us, which corrected out to beating us by 39min on corrected time
.
Finally, we were only 1.5 hours out of second place on corrected time to the boat that won Transpac overall (beat every single boat on corrected time) in the last Transpac race 2 years ago.

In sum, this highlights that we were very competitive indeed, while still have fun and eating and drinking well.
